The Ottoman Empire started to rise and take control after the end of the Byzantine Empire and the fall of Constantinople. As the end of the Constantinople regime the Ottoman Empire builds a stronger nation. For the beginning of the 14th century to early 20th century the Ottomans created a geographical and cultural impact. Although Ottoman women were considered subjects of the empire upon reaching puberty, and Islamic law tradition granted them specific legal rights, with a very small amount of women receiving education. As the habitual crafts were affected by new manufacturing methods and new industries arose, women’s economic roles expanded and changed. As demand grew in the, increase number of women worked. Women created numerous charitable insinuations including schools, hospitals caravansaries baths, fountains, soup kitchens, 20- 30 percent of charitable foundations were established by Ottoman women.
Royal women wielded influence from within the walls of Harem, their power found public expression through their patronage of important architectural projects. Mihrimah sultan born in 1522 and died in1578 was the daughter of the Suleiman, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th and 20th century. Mihrimah designed and executed by one of the greatest Mosque in Turkey with Ottoman’s famous architect of the early-modern era, Sinan. The Ottoman Empire has maintained the status is known for its extensive Islamic influence in the Middle East. Ottoman dynasty women played a minimal role in developing this empire. Mihrimah sultan happens to be one of the most influential and powerful women in the empire.
Mihrimah sultan was highly educated with wealth, being the princess of the Ottoman Empire. Mihrimah had great influence over her father’s notions, being able to dictate what she wanted done to improve the empire Mihrimah was very charitable and contributed to the development of the not just the Empire but the nation. Mihrimah a well-educated architect who had designed hospitals and schools; however she is most known for the “Mihrimah Sultan mosque”. The structure of the mosque was unique and never done before making it one of a kind. As of today people are still intrigued with the beauty, peace and serenity of the mosque.
Without the influence of Mihrimah Sultan , we would not have been able to build places where Muslim women can become scholars, writers, politicians, artists, religious and spiritual leaders today. Therefore, Mihrimah Sultan is an inspiration in my life because even today it is uncommon to see female in the field of architecture. I’m a strong believer in women who follow the rules never make history, breaking outside the “norms” of what females should do is inspiring.
